FSCE Preparation Plan: From Year 4 to Results Day

Year 4 · Build the habits

A daily reading habit (fiction and non-fiction), times tables to automaticity, mental arithmetic fluency, and a weekly “wonder” conversation — science, history, how things work. No exam content needed yet.

Year 5, autumn & spring · Master the curriculum

Track the Year 5 curriculum as it’s taught — FSCE tests nothing beyond it. Keep a word bank, write creatively fortnightly across genres, play puzzles and logic games. Use the English and Maths checklists in this hub to spot gaps early.

The months before the test · Consolidate

Work through both checklists until every topic is secure — depth in Year 5 content, not Year 6 acceleration. 20–30 minutes of focused practice most days, one timed creative-writing piece a week, wide reading throughout. Download your school’s familiarisation guides as soon as the new year’s editions are published.

The final month · Rehearse the format

Work through the official familiarisation paper under timed conditions. Practise: answering to audio instructions, shading ovals in black pen, one-letter-per-box writing, not looking ahead between sections, attempting every question. One or two full run-throughs is enough.

The final week · Taper

Light review only. Sort logistics: what to bring (black pens!), the venue, arrival time. Early nights; a calm, confident child scores better than a crammed one.

Test day

Good breakfast, arrive early, remind them: the recording explains everything, no marks are lost for wrong answers, and gaps in the paper are normal — the test is designed so almost nobody finishes everything perfectly.
