FSCE English Syllabus: The Complete Topic Guide
Comprehension, vocabulary, spelling and grammar, topic by topic
English Syllabus
FSCE English rewards a genuinely strong Year 5 reader and writer: careful comprehension, wide vocabulary, secure spelling, and (at most schools) imaginative writing. There is no standalone grammar paper — grammar and punctuation are assessed through the writing task. Everything maps to the KS2 National Curriculum up to the end of Year 5.
1 · Reading comprehension
How FSCE tests it: One short passage — fiction or non-fiction (the official familiarisation passage was non-fiction) — followed by multiple-choice questions covering the KS2 reading domains.
Retrieval: finding facts stated in the text
Vocabulary in context: what a word means as used in the passage
Inference: working out what the text implies but doesn’t state
Author’s choices: why the writer chose a word, phrase or structure, and its effect
Multi-statement evaluation: deciding which statements are true/false according to the text
Evidence: choosing the answer best supported by the text, not by outside knowledge
2 · Vocabulary — synonyms & word knowledge
How FSCE tests it: Multiple-choice synonym matching — notably with FIVE options (A–E) in the official familiarisation paper. Antonyms are reported by secondary sources. Words tested were solid Year 5/6 level: faithful, vacant, fragrant, discard, suitable, toxic, novel, liberty, comply, pessimistic.
Build breadth with the Year 5/6 statutory word list plus ambitious reading vocabulary
Practise shades of meaning (walk / stride / stroll / march) and multiple meanings (novel)
Keep a personal word bank; use new words in speech and writing the same week
3 · Spelling — “missing letters”
How FSCE tests it: Words appear inside sentences with letters removed; the child writes the missing letters, one CAPITAL letter per box (8 questions in the familiarisation paper — words included compass, climate, concealed, summit, device, evoke).
Master the NC Appendix 1 statutory word lists for Years 3/4 and 5/6
Drill common traps: double consonants, silent letters, unstressed vowels, suffixes (-ous, -tion, -cial, -ible/-able), homophones
Practise the exact format: partial words in context, filling only the gaps, in capitals
4 · Grammar & punctuation — through writing
How FSCE tests it: No standalone SPaG section has appeared; instead, “correct and effective use of spelling, punctuation and grammar” is an explicit criterion of the creative-writing mark scheme.
Secure Year 5 grammar: relative clauses, modal verbs, adverbials, expanded noun phrases, cohesion between paragraphs
Full punctuation range: commas for clauses and parenthesis, brackets, dashes, inverted commas, apostrophes
Varied sentence structures — short for impact, long for description — used deliberately
