When a honeybee discovers a rich patch of flowers, she does not keep the news to herself. Back at the hive, she performs a curious figure-of-eight movement known as the waggle dance. The direction of her dance shows her sisters which way to fly, while its duration tells them how far to travel. Bees watching closely in the darkness of the hive read these signals through touch and vibration rather than sight. Scientists once dismissed the dance as random excitement, but careful experiments in the twentieth century proved that it is a genuine form of communication — one of the most sophisticated in the insect world.
