Most families begin focused preparation in Year 5, about a year before the test, after building strong reading, maths and English foundations from Year 3–4. Starting earlier with light, enjoyable practice is fine; last-minute cramming in Year 6 is the hardest route.
There is no fixed amount, but many children benefit from around a year of steady, structured practice — typically a few short sessions a week across English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning, plus regular reading and some timed mock papers closer to the test.
