FSCE 11+ Exam Format: The Four Papers Explained
The four named papers, answer sheets, audio instructions and scoring
Exam Format
FSCE tailors the test to each school, so the number of papers varies (two to four). All schools share the same mechanics: question booklets with separate machine-readable answer sheets, black pen only, pre-recorded audio instructions, and no marks deducted for wrong answers.
The four named papers (Reading School & CCHS format, 2026)
Adventure Paper
Multiple-choice questions (shade one oval, A–D) that can draw on any of the 11 KS2 subjects. Answered on a separate OMR sheet.
Beacon Paper
Short constrained-response answers: one digit per box for numbers, one CAPITAL letter per box for words. Any of the 11 subjects.
Compass Paper
A second multiple-choice paper with a different subject focus from Adventure. Same oval-shading mechanics.
Discovery Paper
A creative written response on a special answer sheet. Planning space in the booklet is not marked. Only assessed for children who reach the qualifying score on the computer-marked papers.

On the day — how it works
Audio instructions: a voice recording tells children when to open booklets, how to answer (with worked examples), the time for each section, and gives warnings near the end.
Sections with hard gates: children may revisit answers within a section in spare time, but must not look ahead.
Black pen only — no pencils. Multiple choice is answered by fully shading an oval; mistakes are crossed out and the new oval shaded.
Write-in answers: one digit per box; letters in CAPITALS, one per box; answers must follow the stated format (e.g. 24-hour clock, m²).
No negative marking — always attempt every question.
Breaks between papers, clocks displayed, at least one invigilator present; hands up for admin help only.
Marking & scoring pipeline
1 · Optical mark recognition
Answer sheets are scanned and marked automatically, with human experts verifying inconsistencies.
2 · Age standardisation
Raw scores are age-weighted and standardised so younger children in the year group aren’t disadvantaged.
3 · Qualifying standard
Each school (or consortium) sets its own eligible score, each year — comparisons with previous years are unreliable.
4 · Creative task assessed
Only children above the threshold have their creative writing assessed — by a trained panel, using side-by-side comparative judgement at some schools.
5 · Ranking & offers
Eligible children are ranked; offers follow each school’s oversubscription criteria on National Offer Day (1 March).
