Night Vision: a hidden shapes and silhouettes game for the 11+

A spy mission across four locations, seen through night-vision goggles. Each right answer locks the reticle on, the shape glows through the dark and an evidence photo goes into the case file.

About Night Vision

Night Vision practises four ways of looking closely at shapes: finding a shape hidden in a figure, naming how two shapes overlap, working out which layer is on top, and matching silhouettes. A round is 16 scans at four locations, from the rooftops to the vault. Each location leans on one topic, and its fourth scan is a decoy: a harder puzzle worth 1,000 bonus points.

Quicker answers give a sharper evidence photo and more points, but no question runs out of time. A wrong answer brings static and a card that explains the trap, such as choosing a mirror image as a silhouette. Three right in a row switches the goggles to thermal mode with double points, and the review at the end explains every trap. Night Vision is part of the full 11+ Arcade, included in every Prep4All plan.

How to play Night Vision

  1. Choose a starting level: Trainee (easy), Agent (medium) or Spymaster (hard).
  2. Press Start the mission, or switch on Daily challenge first to play today’s puzzles at Agent level.
  3. Read each scan and tap an answer, or press keys 1 to 5.
  4. Get three right in a row for thermal mode: double points and a bonus photo for each scan.
  5. Expose the decoy at the end of each location for 1,000 bonus points.

What it practises for the 11+

Hidden Shape
Your child finds which of five figures hides a given shape at exactly the same size, though it may be turned; the near misses have a different number of parts, a squashed outline or an edge that stops short. At home, trace the shape on thin paper, lay it on each option and turn it, without flipping, until every edge lines up. Learn the topic →
Types of Overlap
Two shapes can be separate, touching, overlapping or one inside the other, and your child names the type, finds the odd one out, counts overlaps or picks which part of a figure is shaded. Drawing two circles in each of the four ways and naming them is a quick check at home. Learn the topic →
Layering
Solid shapes are stacked so each one hides part of the shapes beneath it, and your child works out which is on top or at the bottom, the order from top to bottom, or which picture shows a given stack. The shape whose outline is never broken is on top; cut a few shapes from coloured paper and stack them to see why. Learn the topic →
Silhouettes
A silhouette is the figure filled in black: inside lines disappear and overlapping parts merge, but a real hole stays white, and the match must be the same shape, size and way round. Colouring a simple drawing in with a black pen shows your child exactly what is left.

Hidden shapes and silhouettes are part of non-verbal reasoning, which GL Assessment, CEM, ISEB and many independent schools set; FSCE and CSSE set no reasoning papers.
