ISEB Pre-Test English: Comprehension, Cloze & Shuffled Sentences
Short passages with comprehension domains, plus the distinctive SPaG formats
The English Section (40 minutes)
English rewards a genuinely strong reader: several short passages of 300–500 words — fiction and non-fiction, and reportedly poetry too — each followed by comprehension questions, alongside spelling, punctuation and grammar in the cloze, shuffled-sentence and error-spotting formats reported on the current platform.
1 · Reading comprehension
How it's tested: Several short passages of 300–500 words per test — fiction and non-fiction, and reportedly poetry too — each followed by multiple-choice questions.
Retrieval: finding facts stated in the text
Inference and deduction: what the text implies but doesn’t state
Word meaning in context: what a word means as used in this passage
Literary devices: similes, metaphors, personification and their effect
Summarising: choosing the best summary of a passage or paragraph
Comparison: how ideas, characters or texts relate to each other
2 · Cloze (missing-word) sentences
How it's tested: A sentence with a word removed; the child picks the option that fits the meaning and the grammar. Reported as a signature format of the current platform.
Read the whole sentence before choosing — the right word must fit both sense and grammar
Practise near-synonym discrimination: several options will be “almost right”
Wide reading builds the collocation instinct these questions reward
3 · Shuffled sentences
How it's tested: The words of a sentence are jumbled; the child works out the correct sentence — typically identifying a specific word (for example, the one left over or in a given position). Reported format on the current platform.
Find the verb first, then build subject–verb–object around it
Watch for two plausible orderings — only one makes full grammatical sense
Little-and-often practice works: these are quick wins once the method is automatic
4 · Spelling & punctuation error-spotting
How it's tested: Sentences containing a spelling or punctuation error (or none); the child identifies where the error is.
Master the Year 5/6 statutory spelling list and common homophones
Drill the full punctuation range: apostrophes, commas for clauses, inverted commas
Practise “no error” discipline — resist inventing a mistake that isn’t there
