At the bottom of Grandad's garden, past the compost heap and the broken wheelbarrow, there was a wall. I had always assumed it was the boundary — the edge of his world and the beginning of the farmer's field beyond. I was wrong. The door was almost invisible. Years of ivy had woven across it like a living curtain, its hinges orange with rust. I only noticed it because the cat — Grandad's ancient tabby, Marmalade — had slipped through a gap at the bottom and disappeared. Curiosity, as they say, works on humans too. The door resisted, then surrendered with a groan. I stepped through and into another world. Colour hit me first. After the muddy browns of November, this was an explosion: late roses in deep crimson, lavender bushes humming with bees despite the season, a magnolia tree whose branches reached out like welcoming arms. The air smelled of honey and earth and something faintly sweet I couldn't name. A path of cracked stone tiles wound between the flower beds, leading to a wooden bench beneath an arch of climbing jasmine. On the bench lay a pair of gardening gloves, faded but carefully folded, as though someone had set them down just moments ago and planned to return. Marmalade was sitting in a patch of sunlight, washing his face as though he had known about this place all along. I sat beside him on the warm stone and listened: birdsong, the drone of bees, the distant murmur of wind through leaves. Peace. Perfect, untouched peace. I didn't tell anyone. Not that day. Some discoveries need time to breathe before you share them with the world.
