Rounding Up and Down

Introduction

Hello young mathematicians! Today, we're going to learn about rounding numbers. Rounding is a very useful skill because it helps us to simplify numbers, making them easier to understand and work with. This skill will be very helpful for your 11 Plus Exam Preparation!

Let’s dive in and make rounding fun and easy to understand!

What is Rounding?

Rounding is a way of making numbers simpler but keeping their value close to what it was. We usually round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, or 1,000. We do this to make numbers easier to work with in our heads.

For example, instead of saying 47, we might round it up to 50. This makes the number easier to remember and calculate with!

How to Round Numbers

To round a number, you need to follow these simple steps:

  1. Identify the place value you are rounding to (e.g., tens, hundreds).
  2. Look at the digit to the right of the place value you are rounding to:
    • If this digit is 5 or more, you round up.
    • If this digit is 4 or less, you round down.

Example 1: Rounding to the Nearest Ten

Let's round the number 67 to the nearest ten.

  • The number we want to round is 67.
  • Look at the digit in the ones place: it's 7.
  • Since 7 is 5 or more, we round 67 up to 70.

So, 67 rounded to the nearest ten is 70.

Example 2: Rounding to the Nearest Hundred

Let's round the number 382 to the nearest hundred.

  • The number we want to round is 382.
  • Look at the digit in the tens place: it's 8.
  • Since 8 is 5 or more, we round 382 up to 400.

So, 382 rounded to the nearest hundred is 400.

Example 3: Rounding Down

Now, let's round 243 to the nearest ten.

  • The number we want to round is 243.
  • Look at the digit in the ones place: it's 3.
  • Since 3 is 4 or less, we round 243 down to 240.

So, 243 rounded to the nearest ten is 240.

Practice Questions

Now it's your turn! Try these questions on your own:

  1. Round 56 to the nearest ten.

    • Answer: 60 (because 6 is 5 or more, we round up)
  2. Round 124 to the nearest hundred.

    • Answer: 100 (because 2 is 4 or less, we round down)
  3. Round 679 to the nearest ten.

    • Answer: 680 (because 9 is 5 or more, we round up)

Why Do We Round Numbers?

Rounding helps us make numbers simpler and easier to use. It is especially helpful when we need to:

  • Estimate results in maths problems.
  • Make calculations easier when exact numbers are not needed.
  • Understand large numbers quickly.

For example, if you want to know how many people attended an event and the number was 297, you could round it to 300 to get an idea quickly.

Rounding Tricks

  • Underline the digit you are rounding to, and circle the digit to its right. This makes it easier to see if you need to round up or down.
  • Remember: 5 or more, up we go! 4 or less, down it stays!

Fun Activity: Rounding Race

Let's play a fun game! Write down 5 different numbers like 143, 278, 64, 985, 33. Set a timer for 2 minutes and see how quickly you can round all of them to the nearest ten! You can even compete with a friend or family member to see who finishes first!

Summary

  • Rounding is a way of simplifying numbers by making them easier to work with.
  • If the digit to the right of the place value is 5 or more, we round up. If it is 4 or less, we round down.
  • Rounding is helpful for estimating and making calculations simpler.

Keep practicing your rounding, and soon you’ll be a rounding expert! Remember, rounding will make your maths problems easier and more fun.

Keep Practicing!

Practice rounding different numbers with your parents, teachers, or friends. The more you practice, the better you will get! Don’t forget to ask questions if you get stuck.

Happy rounding, and good luck with your studies!
