About Island Hopper

Island Hopper is a voyage across six islands, from Harbour Isle to Lighthouse Rock. A round is 16 questions over five sea channels, and each channel leans on one topic while mixing in the rest: synonyms and antonyms, word pairs, completing a word pair, odd ones out and word connections. The last crossing is the Storm Channel, with four harder questions, extra time and extra shells.

Quick answers win bonus shells, but no question ever times out. A wrong answer is a wave that pushes the boat back half a buoy and the trap is explained, and the tide still carries you to each island. The ship’s log at the end goes through every trap with a worked answer. Clear the Storm Channel with 13 or more right to unlock the Sunset Isles, sailed at golden hour.

How to play Island Hopper

  1. Choose your sea: Calm Waters, Trade Winds or High Seas.
  2. Read each word question and tap the answer that fits.
  3. Answer while the bar is long to win bonus shells.
  4. Get three right in a row to catch a trade wind and open a treasure crate.
  5. Brave the Storm Channel at the end, then read the ship’s log to see how each trap works.

What it practises for the 11+

Synonyms and Antonyms
Your child finds the word closest in meaning (a synonym) or most opposite in meaning (an antonym), sometimes choosing one word from each of two groups. For example, the closest word to ‘rapid’ is ‘quick’, and its opposite is ‘slow’. Learn the topic →
Word Pairs
Your child works out how two words are linked, then finds another pair linked in the same way and in the same order. For example, a petal is part of a flower, just as a page is part of a book. Learn the topic →
Complete a Word Pair
In each pair the second word is made from the letters of the first by one rule, such as dropping a letter or writing the word backwards, and your child uses that rule on the third word. For example, STOP makes POTS and SPAT makes TAPS, so STAR makes RATS. Learn the topic →
Odd Ones Out
Three of five words share a link, and your child picks the two that do not belong (some questions ask for a single odd one out). For example, in apple, carrot, pear, potato and plum, the odd two are carrot and potato, because the others are fruit. Learn the topic →
Word Connections
Your child finds the one word that links others, such as a word that goes equally well with two pairs of words, or a word that joins two others to make compound words. For example, CORN completes POP (?) FLAKES, making popcorn and cornflakes. Learn the topic →

Closest and opposite meanings, words made in the same way and odd two out are all among GL Assessment’s 21 verbal reasoning question types.

Try Island Hopper questions

Questions from the game, for you to try together. Have a go before opening the answer.

Question 1 · Synonyms and Antonyms

Which word is closest in meaning to ‘permanent’?

  1. solid
  2. lasting
  3. strong
  4. drained
  5. brief
Show the answer

lasting — Permanent means meant to stay for ever, so the closest word is lasting.

Question 2 · Word Pairs

Which pair of words is linked in the same way as ‘envelope’ and ‘paper’?

  1. author and book
  2. glass and window
  3. actor and theatre
  4. donkey and hay
  5. crayon and wax
Show the answer

crayon and wax — An envelope is made of paper, and a crayon is made of wax: the same link, in the same order. The answer is crayon and wax.

Question 3 · Complete a Word Pair

Find the word that completes the third pair in the same way as the first two pairs. SCREAM → CREAM FACTOR → ACTOR ORANGE → ?

  1. ARE
  2. NEAR
  3. ORGAN
  4. ORNGE
  5. RANGE
Show the answer

RANGE — The rule is: drop the first letter. SCREAM becomes CREAM, FACTOR becomes ACTOR, so ORANGE becomes RANGE.
