Roughly a thousand kilometres from the North Pole, a concrete tunnel juts out of a frozen hillside. It looks like the entrance to a mine. Behind its steel doors, more than a million samples of seed lie in sealed foil packets, stacked on shelves in rooms kept at minus eighteen degrees. This is the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, and it exists in case something goes wrong.
The vault is a backup. Around the world there are roughly seventeen hundred smaller seed banks, each holding the crops of its own region — rice, maize, wheat, beans, varieties bred over centuries by farmers. Those collections are useful but fragile. A power cut, a flood, a war or simply a lost grant can undo decades of careful storage. Svalbard's purpose is to hold a duplicate of as much of that material as possible, somewhere very cold and very far away.
The site was chosen with care. The surrounding rock is permanently frozen, so even if the vault's refrigeration failed completely, the seeds would stay below freezing for weeks while repairs were made. The tunnel runs deep into the mountain, well above any sea level the melting ice caps could produce. Svalbard is also politically stable and, unusually, almost impossible to reach by accident.
The vault has been opened for withdrawal only a handful of times. The best-known case came in 2015, when researchers who had fled the war in Syria asked for samples of drought-resistant wheat to restart their own damaged collection elsewhere. The seeds were sent, grown, harvested and — a few years later — deposited back into the mountain.
That return matters. The vault is not a museum of plants that have vanished. It is a promise that if a crop is ever lost, it can be handed back.
