A handwritten letter has appeared in the headmistress's pigeonhole, accusing one of the staff of cheating in the staff quiz. The letter has no signature, no stamp, and the headmistress wants to know who wrote it.
Dear Mrs Powell,
It pains me to write this. As you know, the staff quiz on Friday evening was won, with a final score of forty-seven, by Miss Tan of the Science department. What you may not know is that Miss Tan was seen consulting her phone under the table during Round 4 (Geography). It is not for me to say that the result should be overturned. But it would, in my view, be the right thing to do.
A concerned colleague.
Who is most likely to have written the anonymous letter?
Mr Howe — he came second and had motive
Miss Tan — she wrote it about herself to deflect
Mrs Park — she had access, opportunity and is over-explaining
Someone from outside the school
Ask your child: in a real-life argument, why might someone who is innocent and someone who is guilty BOTH start over-explaining? How can you tell the difference?
