Season 1 — The Mystery of the Hartwell Library

Case 1 — The Missing Library Stamp

Hartwell Library's antique date-stamp has vanished overnight. Three people had keys. Read all three statements, then lock in your verdict.

SUSPECTS
Mr Perryman — Librarian, 28 years' service
Mrs Akhtar — Cleaning supervisor
Arjun (12) — Library Helper Club member

I locked up at 6 o'clock on Friday evening. I always do. The stamp was on its little brass tray on the front desk, exactly where it has lived for forty-one years. I went home, watched the snooker, and slept poorly because my neighbour's dog was howling. When I opened up on Saturday morning at half past nine, the tray was empty.

I do not believe a thief came in. The door was locked. The window was locked. The stamp was simply not there.

Your verdict

Based on the three statements, who is the most likely culprit?

Mr Perryman — he had the most opportunity

Mrs Akhtar — she lied about hearing a voice

Arjun — he points the finger at the back door he knows is faulty, and admits he wants to use the stamp

An unknown thief who slipped in through the faulty back door

FOR PARENTS

Ask your child: which sentence in each statement did they "pin" as the most important? Why?
