🪞 The Reflection Funhouse 🪞
Welcome to the Mirror Maze!
🧙♀️
"Step right up!" says Mirror Maggie.
Welcome to the Reflection Funhouse! Everything here has a mirror image. Mirrors can make shapes look backwards, upside down, or both!
Learning about reflections is really important for your 11+ exam. Let's discover the magic of mirror images together! 🌟
Ready to enter the Funhouse? Let's go! 🎪
🪞 What is a Reflection?
🧙♀️
A reflection is like looking in a mirror. The shape gets flipped across a line (called the mirror line). Left becomes right, but up stays up!
Vertical Mirror Line
When the mirror line is vertical (up-down), left and right swap:
Key rule: In a vertical mirror reflection, left becomes right and right becomes left. But the shape stays the same height — nothing moves up or down!
Think about looking in your bathroom mirror: your left hand looks like it's on the right side! 🤚🪞✋
↔️ Vertical vs Horizontal Mirror Lines
🔮
Mirror lines can be vertical (up-down) or horizontal (left-right). Each one flips the shape differently!
Vertical Mirror Line ↕
Left ↔ Right swap
Arrow was pointing right, now points left!
Horizontal Mirror Line ↔
Top ↔ Bottom swap
Flag was on top, now hangs below!
Remember:
- Vertical mirror line = left and right swap (like looking in a mirror on a wall)
- Horizontal mirror line = top and bottom swap (like looking in a puddle)
🎮 Mirror Challenge!
🧙♀️
Time to test your mirror skills! Look at each shape and the mirror line, then pick the correct reflection.

Q1: Reflect this L-shape across the vertical mirror line
Q2: Reflect this arrow across the vertical mirror line
Q3: Reflect this flag across the horizontal mirror line
⚠️ Common Mistakes & Top Tips
🧠
Mirror Maggie has seen lots of students get confused by these tricky bits. Learn from their mistakes!
❌ Biggest Mistake: Confusing Reflection with Rotation!
Reflected L
(Flipped — mirror image)
VS
Rotated L
(Turned — same shape)
They look different! A reflected shape is a mirror image, while a rotated shape is the same shape turned around.
💡 Tip 1: Use the "Letter Test"
- Imagine the shape has a letter on it (like F or P)
- In a reflection, the letter would appear backwards
- In a rotation, the letter would still read normally (just turned)
📏 Tip 2: Check the Distance
- Each point should be the same distance from the mirror line on both sides
- If a corner is 2 squares from the mirror, its reflection is also 2 squares away
⚡ Tip 3: Diagonal Mirror Lines (Advanced!)
- Sometimes the mirror line goes diagonally — this is the trickiest type!
- Trace each corner to its reflected position one at a time
- The reflected point is always the same distance from the line, at a right angle to it
