I'm Overlap Oscar, and today we're going to investigate how shapes relate to each other. In Non-Verbal Reasoning, you need to understand whether shapes are separate, touching, overlapping, or inside one another!
Separate
Touching
Overlapping
Contained
Understanding these four types of overlap is essential for spotting patterns in NVR questions!
🎓 This is a key topic in the 11+ Non-Verbal Reasoning exam!
"Let's crack these cases!" 🕵️✨
📚 Separate and Touching
🕵️
"Let's start with the two simplest types of overlap. These are the easiest to spot!"
Type 1: Separate 📦
Separate means the shapes are completely apart with a gap between them.
Circle & Square — Separate
Two Circles — Separate
💡 Key sign: You can draw a line between the shapes without crossing either one.
Type 2: Touching 💬
Touching means the shapes meet at exactly one point or along an edge, but they do not overlap.
Two Circles — Touching
Circle & Triangle — Touching
💡 Key sign: The shapes share a boundary point or edge, but no area is shared.
💡 Oscar's Detective Tip
Ask yourself: "Is there any gap between the shapes?" If yes, they are separate. If they meet but do not cross over, they are touching.
"Separate means apart, touching means they just meet. Simple!" 🤔
🧠 Overlapping and Contained
🕵️
"Now for the trickier types! These are the ones that appear most often in the 11+ exam."
Type 3: Overlapping 🔌
Overlapping means the shapes cross over each other, sharing some area but not all.
Two Circles — Overlapping
Square & Circle — Overlapping
💡 Key sign: There is a shared region, but each shape also has its own area outside the overlap.
Type 4: Contained (Inside) 🤔
Contained means one shape is completely inside another shape.
Small Circle in Big Circle
Triangle in Square
💡 Key sign: One shape is entirely within the other — no part sticks out.
1Separate — shapes are completely apart, with a gap between them.
2Touching — shapes meet at a point or edge, but do not cross over.
3Overlapping — shapes cross over, sharing some area but not all.
4Contained — one shape is completely inside another.

🧠 Overlap in Figure Sequences!
🕵️
"Great detective work! Now let's see how overlap types change in sequences. This is what the 11+ exam really tests!" 💪
Spotting Overlap Patterns 🔌
Example sequence: Two circles move closer together each figure. What comes in Figure 4?
Fig 1: Separate
→
Fig 2: Touching
→
Fig 3: Overlapping
→
Fig 4: Contained!
The circles get closer together each time: separate → touching → overlapping → contained!
Example sequence: A triangle moves outward from inside a circle. What comes in Figure 4?
