"I'm Captain Comma! I'm the trickiest punctuation mark because I have SO many jobs. Here are the three main ones!"
"I'm the Apostrophe Agent! I'm tiny but mighty! I have two very important jobs."
's
Job 1: Possession (Owning)
Shows that something BELONGS to someone:
β the dog's bone = the bone belonging to the dog
β Sarah's bag = the bag belonging to Sarah
β the children's toys = the toys belonging to the children
Plural already ending in s?
the dogs' bones (more than one dog)
'
Job 2: Contraction (Shortening)
Shows where letters have been removed:
β do not β don't
β cannot β can't
β I will β I'll
β they are β they're
β οΈ Common Mistake Alert! it's = it is ("It's raining" = "It is raining") β its = belonging to it ("The dog wagged its tail") β
