In 11+ exams, you'll be given clues about a mystery letter and you must work out which letter it is. It's like being a real detective!

📋 Clue Type 1: Before & After

The most common clue tells you to go a certain number of letters before or after a given letter. Let's see how!

🔍 Clue: "The letter that comes 3 after D"

Step 1: Find D in the alphabet.

Step 2: Count forward 3 letters: E(1), F(2), G(3)

Answer: G ✅

🔍 Clue: "The letter that comes 2 before K"

Step 1: Find K. Step 2: Count backwards 2: J(1), I(2)

Answer: I ✅

💡 Top tip: "After" means go forward (towards Z). "Before" means go backwards (towards A).

📋 Clue Types 2 & 3

Now for two more clue types that appear in exams. Pay close attention, investigator!

🔍 Type 2: "The letter halfway between B and F"

Method: Write out all letters from B to F: B, C, D, E, F

Find the middle one. There are 5 letters, so the middle (3rd) is D ✅

💡 Quick trick: B=2, F=6. Average = (2+6) ÷ 2 = 4. The 4th letter is D! ✅

🔍 Type 3: "The 2nd letter of TRAIN"

T R A I N

Simply count to the 2nd letter of the word TRAIN: T(1st), R(2nd)

Answer: R ✅

🧠 Exam tip: Sometimes clues are combined! For example: "The 3rd letter of HOUSE, moved 2 forward." First find U (3rd letter), then count forward 2: V, W. Answer: W!

Great detective work! In harder questions, you'll need to follow two or more steps to find the mystery letter. Let's practise!

🔍 Multi-step clue:

"Take the 4th letter of STAMP, then move 3 letters back."

Step 1: Find the 4th letter of STAMP: S(1), T(2), A(3), M(4)

Step 2: Move 3 letters back from M: L(1), K(2), J(3)

Answer: J ✅

🔍 Another multi-step clue:

"The letter 2 after the letter halfway between D and H"

Step 1: Halfway between D and H → D, E, F, G, H → F

Step 2: 2 after F: G(1), H(2)

Answer: H ✅

🧠 Golden rule for combined clues:

1. Read the whole clue first.
2. Work from the inside out — solve the inner clue first, then apply the outer instruction.
3. Take it step by step — don't rush!
